The Call to Holiness

The Call to Holiness

“Even as he chose us in him before the foundation of the world that we should be HOLY and BLAMELESS before him.” –Ephesians 1:4

Have you ever had the experience of reading a verse of scripture and having a word pop out at you like a prairie dog springing out of his hole? Every once in a while that happens to me and this verse from the opening statement of Paul’s letter to the Ephesians is no exception!

IMG_0438Have you ever had the experience of reading a verse of scripture and having a word pop out at you like a prairie dog springing out of his hole? Every once in a while that happens to me and this verse from the opening statement of Paul’s letter to the Ephesians is no exception!

Often, when reading these opening statements in the Pauline epistles, I will inadvertently skim through his salutations and blessings to get to the “good stuff” later on. But Paul wastes no time here. Instead, he immediately begins to instruct the church regarding the grand plan and purpose that God has for them…and for you!

First, we find that God chose us. This is not an easy thing to grasp, but Paul is speaking here of God’s sovereign plan of redemption and abundance for the believer! This means that if you have trusted in Christ for your salvation that God chose you…BEFORE YOUR WERE BORN! In fact, the phrase that Paul uses is “before the foundation of the world”.

This means that before the created order, God was thinking of YOU.

Before light and darkness were separated, God chose you for a purpose, for something beautiful and glorious and wonderful.

Before God created the beautiful mountains and fragrant flowers, God was first preparing an inheritance for you that would satisfy the longings and desires that he would in turn create within you.

What is this thing that he chose us for? What is the purpose for which he saved us?

“That we should be HOLY and BLAMELESS before him!”

Lord, teach me to understand what it means to be holy and blameless before you. I desire to know you and to be an imitator of you. Help me to mimic you as a child mimics their father. Keep me from impure thoughts and help me to worship you today in the splendor of YOUR HOLINESS. AMEN.
